Based on the best super mini the mid-1970s bad to offer, the VW Golf GTI was describe the father of the modern hot-hatch brat-pack, setting the standards for two generations to come. When the first Golf GTI appeared in 1975, who could have guessed that production figures would pass 1.35 million by the time the car reached its 20th birthday? Certainly not Volkswagen itself, which only envisaged a short run of 5,000 units for tile sporty hatchback in those gloomy years following the fuel crisis.

The first prototypes were fitted with the 80blip carburetor engine from the Audi 80 GT, but by the time the car appeared at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show it was sporting fuel injection for an output of 110 bhp. The first model had a four-speed gearbox driving through the front wheels.

Outwardly there was very little to mark the GTI out from the standard Golf: discreet badging, side stripes, a chin spoiler and plastic wheel-arch lips. The car was an instant hit, mixing punchy performance and tenacious knock-about handling from the firmed-up strut suspension with the practicality of a well-built three-door hatchback body of well proven durability. Production figures leapt from just over 10,000 in 1976 to 31,000 in 1977 and an amazing 42,000 in 1978.

The first right-hand-drive cars were not launched until July 1979, and that year multi-spoke BBS alloy wheels and a five-speed gearbox became part of the specification. There was a popular cabriolet version of the GTI, but the handling suffered from the extra weight involved in the strengthening of the Golf shell. The drop-top MkI body shape lasted right up until 1992.

The best of the Mkl GTIs was the 1800 model, replacing the 1600 in 1982. Power went up only marginally, but there was 81b ft (10.8Nin) of extra torque, produced 1500rpm lower down. You could spot an 1800 by its new wider alloys, twin headlights and steel sunroof.

The GTI has lived through two generations since the demise of the Mkl in 1985. The shape has been gradually rounded-off and the power— and luxury -increased. The 16-valvers of the mid-1980s packed 139bbp and came complete with electric windows, sunroof, central locking and driver's scat height adjustment. The facelifted 1990-iiiodel-year cars had deeper spoilers and power steering. The most coveted of all the MkIIs is the Rallye, a 5,000-off limited edition four-wheel-drive Golf using VW's Syncro system allied to a 1756cc supercharged engine. Built as a homologation special for rallying, the Rallye spawned the front-drive but supercharged C60. This was built on normal GTI production lines - unlike the Rallye, which was produced in Belgium.

The concept continued in the MkIII Golf, either as a 155bbp 2.0-litre or the blockbuster 140mpli (225kph) VR6 complete with super-sweet 2.8-litre V-six power — and that is a guaranteed future classic.
