In March 1989, news filtered through that Vauxhall was cooperating with Lotus in the development of a high-performance version of the Carlton saloon (sedan) (known as the Opel Omega outside Britain). When it became clear that General Motors was not going to follow the lead set by BMW and Mercedes-Benz in limiting top speed to 155inph (249kpli), a minor media storm broke out. The new Lotus Carlton, said the press, was irresponsible: its to]) speed of 176mpli (283kpli) was more than anyone should ever be doing.

The controversy over the Lotus Carlton's speed was spurious. Any number of cars from Porsche, Ferrari or Aston Martin was capable of going much faster than this. The germ of the problem in the media’s eyes was that the Carlton was a family car, capable of unique selling point, since no other super car could transport so many so fast. In truth, it was all a storm in the proverbial teacup, since the volume of cars sold was tiny; General Motors wanted to sell 1,100, lint, in fact, only 440 were built because of the effects of the recession on sales.

The heart of the new super saloon was its Loins-developed 3.6-lilre six-cylinder 24-valve engine. With its twin electronic management, it had huge power and torque. This, together with a Corvette ZK-1 six-speed gearbox, gave performance that was simply sensational. The Carlton accelerated faster than a Ferrari Testarossa and could reach 160mph (256kpli) in under a mile.

Not only did it go fast in a straight finesse — a car with the Lotus badge on it should behave in no oilier way. Self-leveling dampers controlled the suspension superbly, providing handling of an order that belied the car's bulk. Auto car magazine described the braking temperamental sports car; the Lotus Carlton was benign and extremely safe. It would happily idle around town and was forgiving if abused. You could also go shopping, since the boot was huge – and the rear seals folded to increase capacity.

Passengers were supremely cosseted, You got leather scats, a leather steering wheel, polished wood and pleated cloth trim, plus head restraints all round, six- speaker CD hi-fi, air-conditioning,. electric windows and a sunroof. The Lotus Carlton looked the part too. Its body kit comprised a deep front spoiler, wheel- arch extensions, aerodynamic side skirts, a new rear bumper and a boot spoiler; and there was just one color. Imperial Green. The price was certainly high at £48,000 ($80,840) but entirely justified by the car's rarity and specification.
