Few cars are more evocative of late-50s Britain and its popular obsession with all things American than the Vauxhall PA Cresta. This was Vauxhall's answer to the Ford Zodiac, obviously inspired by the products of Vauxhall's American parent, General Motors of Detroit. Small fins sprouted from rear wings. Front and rear screens had a heavy "dog-leg" wraparound. Optional whitewall tires and two-tone paint only e mphasized the heavy American influence.

Launched in 1957, the PA Cresta (and its cheaper, less well-equipped sister the Velox) leaned heavily on the E Series mechanically, though they were physically bigger cars. The smooth, under stressed 2262cc pushrod six remained, now producing 75 bhp for a top speed of more than 90 mph (145 kph). The three-speed, column- shift box was all synchromesh now, but the PA retained the leaf-spring rear axle and soft wishbone and coil-spring suspension of its predecessor.

For 1959 the wrap-around rear screen became one-piece and there was a new grille, along with the option of an estate car model, built by Friary (the Queen had one for many years). The best of the bunch was the 1960 model with a bigger 2.6-litre, 96 bhp engine. Other recognition points were bigger wheels and fins. Two-pedal "Hydramatic" control or dual overdrive for the manual box broadened the car's appeal. Servo- assisted front disc brakes were another welcome improvement.

Sales remained strong right up to the model's death in 1962. By then, fins were somewhat passe and Vauxhall had a cleaner looking Velox and Cresta on the stocks, the PB. The Cresta name finally died with the PC model, discontinued in 1972, but the PA remains the best-loved and most collectable of this breed of big Vauxhalls.
