The Cerbera named after a creature from classical mythology, was first seen at the 1994 Birmingham Motor Show. The long, low two-plus-two coupe may have drawn on other TVR models for its styling inspiration, but the outcome was the best model TVR had ever produced.

TVR's dynamic approach to design meant that, from debut to production readiness, the Cerbera took little over two years. Especially challenging was the all-new AJP V-eight engine, the first engine designed and developed entirely by TVR. It was initially used in racing TVR Tuscans lint was refined enough to pass tough emissions tests. Like all other power plants used in TVRs, (lie AJP sounded raw and urgent, yet was also remarkably smooth.

The 4.2-litre engine developed a monstrous 350bbp and could rev as high as 7000 rpm. Unencumbered by aerodynamic weakness, the Cerbera was capable of staggering performance: 0-60mph (0-96kpli) in 4.0 seconds and up to 185mph (298kpli) top speed. An even more thunderous 4.5-lilre GT version was shown in 1996 — it had no less than 440bhp.

The Cerbera's chassis was quite capable of dealing with all that power. Its handling was safe yet exploitable and fun, while the ride quality was firm yet comfortable.

Undoubtedly one of the car's best features was its interior. The cabin was a haven of curves, which were almost sci-fi in the way their loops swathed the passengers - all four of them, at a push. The leather-stitched console incorporated classy black-on-white dials, while the underslung cluster of dials, below the steering wheel worked very well. The Cerbera has become a fitting its handling was safe yet exploitable and top-of-the-range model in TVR's line-up.
