British Leyland had a world-beater in the TRIUMPH STAG - making its poor execution, dodgy reputation and untimely demise more tragic. First seen in 1970, this four-seater convertible looked good with top up or down, the strength-giving roll bar skillfully blended into the profile by Michelotti to become part of the character of the styling, rather than detracting from it.

The Stag's brand-new 2998cc V-eight engine produce 145 bhp, which in manual overdrive guise made this 28101b (1275kg) luxury four-seater good for 116 mph (186 kph) with 60 (96) coming up in 9.3 seconds. Automatics were good for about 110 (177) and fuel use in both versions was about 20mpg. With struts up front and semi-trailing arms behind, the Stag had neat, conventional handling but always lacked the well-bred poise of its German contemporary, the Mercedes SL.

It lacked the German's reliability, too. Overheating was the initial snag, usually triggered by a blocked radiator which was sensitive to silting (in the service schedule Triu mph omitted to mention the need for a yearly coolant flush and new antifreeze). A blown head gasket usually followed and, at the same time, the thinned-out, overheated oil that resulted from a boil-up did little to protect crank bearings. A worn timing chain on a neglected engine also gave trouble: left too long, the chain would wreck the valve gear. Initial sales were healthy but, as word got around about the engine, it bombed. The V-eight was not used in any other car. The last Stags, MkIIs with detail changes, were built in 1977.

These days, specialists seem to have the Stag's engine problems licked. Now with uprated radiators, hardened cranks and regular 3000-mile (4800-km) oil changes, the engines can have a long life. It is tragic that Triu mph got the engine so wrong first time around, because the rest of the car is quite well sorted.

The Stag was a great idea. Indeed, it still is, if the car's continuing popularity, almost 20 years after its death, is anything to go by.
