A torquey tourer rather than a true sports car, the Triu mph roadster with its "dickey-seat" fold out was one of the most memorable British cars of the immediate post-war years.

Standard's British boss Sir John Black bought Triu mph in 1944 to take on Jaguar, using the Triu mph name as an upper-crust sister marque to Triu mph and trading on the make's pre-war prestige. Jaguar's boss William Lyons had built his business with the help of Standard, which had provided engines, gearboxes and chassis for his stylish SS - later Jaguar - saloons and sport scars, yet he had brushed aside Black's proposal of a takeover. Enter the roadster, a new breed of Triu mph using existing Standard mechanics and calling on engineering skills developed during the company's wartime experience in aircraft manufacturing. Out of the parts bin came the 1776cc Standard 14 engine and matching gearbox. In fact, the power unit selected was the overhead-valve variant created by Harry Weslake to the order of William Lyons and since 1937 made by Standard exclusively for the SS-Jaguar 1 ½ liter. Black had wanted a straight six originally but in a moment of weakness had sold the tooling for Standard's own six-cylinder engine to Jaguar. The transverse-leaf independent front suspension of the Flying Standard Series was used with a Standard Fourteen back axle.

The under slung chassis of the new Triu mph was a completely new design, a simple ladder frame made of the 3 ½ in readily available, round-section tubing. In a similar vein, bodying the car in aluminum, over a timber frame, got around the steel shortages of the immediate post-war years. For the Roadster's styling, Black wanted something in the style of the SS-100 with big headlamps and flowing wings. He wanted a dickey-seat too, a hangover from the pre-war Triu mph Dolomite Roadster coupe. Styled by Frank Callaby, it had a long bonnet with full-bodied front wings, a hunched rear and a cramped-looking passenger compartment.

At the time of its 1946 introduction, the cheap-to-build 1800 was a unique concept, with its bench front seat and its two jump-seats in the capacious boot. It offered a three-plus-two configuration that made it a more versatile package than any other post-war open car.
In 1948, after 2,501 Roadsters had been made, the car received a new wet-liner Vanguard engine along with the Vanguard three-speed gearbox. In this form, a further 2,000 examples were made before production ceased in October 1949.

The bigger-engine car was 0.7cwt (36kg) lighter and with 3 bhp more it was better accelerating — 0-60 mph (96 kph) in 27.9 seconds, against 34.4 seconds for the 1800 model.
