In Toyota's sprawling range of models, the Celica stands out as a model that has consistently had integrity, style and certain panache. In the Toyota scheme of things, it has always slotted in as the four-seater coupe model and for the first generations it was based on the Carina saloon (sedan) floor pan.

The first Celica appeared in 1970 with exactly the right balance of Coke-bottle styling and good proportions. For the first three years, the shape was always a notchback, but from 1973 an attractive new Liftback rear-end was also offered.

Various engines were used, the most popular being the 1600 and 2000, which were available in overhead-valve, overhead-cam and twin-cam forms. The best models were the GT versions with their extra power and sports equipment, Toyota made sure, in true Japanese style, that every Celica was lavishly equipped. Even the most basic model had five gauges, cigar lighter and stereo — real luxuries in those days.

The first-generation Celica was replaced in 1977 by another stylish model, and then again in 1981. In 1985, the fourth-generation Celica became very much more stylish, with its smooth shape, pop-up headlamps and airy cabin, while a convertible version was new to the range. The 1989 edition sold as well as ever, and the Celica — now in its sixth generation — is a much-valued name in the Toyota portfolio.
