Toyota launched its beautiful 2000GT as an image-building loss leader. Its birth was convoluted. It was Nissan, not Toyota, who in 1963 had originally commissioned the styling from Graf Goertz, the New York-based industrial designer, best known for his 503 and 507 BMWs. Yamaha built a running prototype, but Nissan backed out at the last minute, leaving Yamaha free to sell the design package to Toyota. Because production levels were always going to be low, Toyota farmed out the work to Yamaha and the first prototype was presented at the Tokyo show in 1965. The production car stood just 45in (114cm) high on tall, slim 165/15 shod centre-lock alloys.The sweep of its roof and its rounded rear haunches were undeniably influenced by the E-Type, but there was much that was bold and original about this now 30-year-old design with its upswept slash-like side windows, slim pillars and plunging, sensual bonnet line.

Under its seductively curvaceous shell, the 2000GT's hardware lived up to the looks. There were twin-cams (a free-breathing and sophisticated hemi-head design with straight-through ports and big valves), a brace of double-throat Mikuni/Solex carburetors and a purposeful six-branch exhaust manifold, one outlet for each cylinder. The gearbox had five speeds, there were four-wheel a disc brakes, and the Lotus-like back bone chassis used wishbones all round. Back in 1965, this was copybook stuff: rare in high-caliber European machinery, unheard of on a Japanese car. There were three optional final drives, but with the 4.375 ratio 2000GT should be good for 130-135 mph (209-217 kph), which means 100 mph (160 kph) in third and 115 fl85) in fourth. The high second will run the 28051b (1272kg) 2000GT to 70 mph (112 kph) in 12.7 seconds.

You couldn't actually buy a 2000GT until May 1967. Changes were few in a protracted five-year cycle although, towards the end of its life, Toyota built nine simplified single-camshaft cars with air conditioning and the option of automatic transmission to stir up interest in North America. Despite an ecstatic Road and Track test report on the twin- cam version, only 63 American buyers could be persuaded to part with $6,800 for a 2000GT, a price well above that of more prestigious Porsche and Jaguar competition. Even at that price, Toyota probably lost money on every one: you only have to look at the specification - and the complex curvatures in the body and glass - to see why. Production ceased in October 1970, just as Datsun were coming on stream with the 240Z. With only 337 produced, the 2000GT is one of the most collectable post-war Japanese classics.
