“Put a Chrysler Sunbeam in your life” went the glib ad campaign for the new supermini from Chrysler in 1977. Within two years the group had been sold to Peugeot, which renamed all Chrysler models as Talbots, including the Sunbeam.

This thoroughly unexceptional hatchback was based on the Hillman Avenger, but that did engender one strong advantage: unlike most super minis, this model had rear-wheel drive and therefore exploitable handling. In short, it was ripe for a pump up in volume.

So the Sunbeam Lotus was born. Lotus had a history of engineering exciting road cars for mainstream makers (witness the Ford Lotus Cortina), and it did a wonderful job on the Sunbeam. Into the engine bay went Lotus’s 2.2 liter twin-cam engine, whose 150 bhp made this one of the fastest of the brat pack of rally-orientated specials around at the time: 121 mph (195 kph) top speed and a 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) time of 7.4 seconds.

Lotus also specified a five-speed ZF gearbox with first gear canted over to the left in true racing style. The suspension was lowered and stiffened and brand new wide allow wheels were created. The live axle and rear drum brakes may not have been very sophisticated but the set-up was certainly effective, as Henri Toivonen found out when he won the World Rally Championship is in a Sunbeam Lotus.

The Sunbeam Lotus felt special, too, with its black (later also blue) paint, silver side stripes and prominent Lotus badging. Its career was cut short in 1981 when the plug was pulled on the whole Sunbeam range.
