The sunbeam Tiger, introduced in 1964, was in essence nothing more than a V-eight-engine version of the four-cylinder Alpine whose pretty, open body dated from 1959. As with the AC Cobra, the initial engineering was carried out by American Caroll Shelby, but all subsequent work was done by the parent company Rootes. Out came the four-cylinder 1592cc engine and in went a Capacity 4260-4727cc Ford V-eight of 4.2 liters along with a Power 164-200 bhp new "top loader" four-speed gearbox and beefed-up final drive.

This much bigger engine required extensive re-engineering under the bonnet and a stiffened-up shell, Rather than clog up the higher-volume Alpine production lines with the new car, Rootes subcontracted the job to Jensen. Located just up the road in West Bromwich, in the West Midlands, Jensen were famous for their own big V-eight GT — the CV8 — and were already producing the big Healey models for BMC.

With a leap from 97 to 164 bhp, the Tiger was a very different kind of car from the modest little Alpine, though they looked identical apart from discreet badging. Top speed was 117 mph (187 kph), with 0-60 (96) in 9.5 seconds, the enormous torque rendering the gear- box almost superfluous. The Tiger was no car for the novice, however: the rack-and- pinion steering — somewhat hastily contrived - wasn't of the highest quality, and the Hillman-derived suspension was never really adequate for the power now on tap, even with the Panhard rod and optional limited-slip diff. Still, it was good value and sold well in America. It wasn't offered in Britain until 1965.

Its life was cut short when Chrysler took a controlling interest in Rootes: the new regime didn't like the idea of a car using an engine from its Detroit arch- rival. Thus, the axe came down on the Tiger, but not before Rootes had produced 571 MkII models in 1967-68 with a bigger 4.7-litre engine from the Mustang. This version had wider gear ratios and was easily identified by its body stripes and egg-crate grille. Today these exciting cars are much sought after as a cheaper alternative to the AC Cobra.
