Sweden's aerospace leaders are very well known for their motor cars, and the string of models Saab has produced for over 50 years have always been unconventional, highly distinctive and instantly recognizable. The 99 Turbo was a model that launched Saab into a new era.

Saab's traditional front-wheel-drive layout remained, but the engine was new, jointly developed by Triumph and Saab. When it came to extracting more performance from this engine, Saab adopted turbo charging technology. Turbos were still a novelty in 1977, and Saab made the turbocharger an art-form of its very own. Long after other makers had abandoned this route, Saab plugged away with it as a performance and emissions device.

As a result of turbo charging, the standard fuel-injected 2.0-litre engine's power was boosted from 118bhp to 145bhp, very high for an engine of this size in 1977. New heights of performance were achieved — 0—60mph (0—96kph) in nine seconds, 125mph (201kph) top speed - though Saab never did iron out drastic turbo lag (the lime it took for the turbo to cut in once the throttle had been pressed), nor a tendency to ferocious take-offs.

Saab pioneered the birth of the popular turbo car with the 99, and it became something of a cult car. Its ruthless turbo speed was quickly duplicated by others such as Audi and many Japanese makers, but none made the formula quite as attractive as Saab.
