The Pininfarina-styled ROLLS-ROYCE CAMARGUE, Crewe's flamboyant 1970s super-coupe was a car for kings, princes, diplomats and superstars, a hedonistic two-door with no true rival. There was little to match it for size in the coupe stakes, and nothing approaching its price: the Camargue was the most expensive car on the market at its launch in 1975, 50 per cent dearer than a Cornich convertible.

Pininfarina was the natural choice for styling this new flagship, having done one-off designs on various Bentleys and Rolls-Royce in the 50s. Sergio Pininfarina even moderated his usual fee, but the styling got a luke-warm reception from some quarters. Farina did the interior too, and designed a new dashboard using standard Silver Shadow instruments but with square black plates similar to an aircraft cockpit.

Launched in Sicily in 1975, the 120mph (193kph) Camargue was the first Rolls-Royce to have curved window glass and the first ever designed to metric dimensions. Mechanically, the car used a slightly more powerful 6.75-litre alloy Rolls pushrod V-eight engine and the usual independent suspension and complex hydraulic systems for the four-wheel disc brakes and self-leveling suspension.

The star technical attraction of the $48,500 Camargue was its superb split level air-conditioning system, which cost as much as a Mini and had the cooling capacity of 30 domestic refrigerators. Each Camargue took six months to make, at a rate never higher than one per week. Unsurprisingly, the Camargue's best market was the USA (280 cars); 75 went to Saudi Arabia, while in Europe the car's best market was its native. Britain with 136 sold.
