Today's sporting Estates come from BMW and Volvo, but it was Reliant of Tamworth — a marque synonymous with the three-wheeler — that originated the genre in 1968. Its trend-setting Scimitar GTE inspired imitators worldwide.

The Scimitar GTE (Grand Touring Estate), based on Reliant's existing Ford three-liter V-six engine Scimitar coupe, had a trendy rising waistline and a wedge-like profile which skillfully hid the 36 cu ft of load space, accessible through a stylish one-piece glass hatch supported on spring struts. The full four-seat GTE was the first car to have rear seats that folded separately, an arrangement copied by almost all hatchbacks. Styled by Tom Karen of Ogle (responsible for the Scimitar coupe and Robin three-wheeler), like every other Reliant the GTEs body was moulded in rust-resistant glassfibre while retaining a steel box-frame chassis for strength and rigidity. Ford's big pushrod three-liter V-six engine in such a light car meant the Scimitar was fast — it could do 120 mph (193 kph) - and reliable. Frugal overdrive cars did 27mpg. The Scimitar was soon the darling of the English country-house set, an image boosted when Princess Anne received a GTE as a Christmas gift in 1970.
In 1975, Reliant introduced wide-bodied SE6 cars. These softer, more comfortable Scimitars — built to enter the executive market — never recaptured the elegance of the 1968 original. Cheaper mass-market imitators were eating into the market the GTE once had to itself. By the early 80s, Reliant were losing heart, ravaged by recession and unable to find investment to bring the GTE up to date. The last car was built in 1986.
