Porsche built the 959 with the intention that it should become a formidable Group B racing car, and it was shown at the 1983 Frankfurt Motor Show as the "Gruppe B". But when Group B cars were banned from racing in 1986, Porsche switched the emphasis of its design program to create the ultimate road car.

It started by drastically reshaping the basic 911 body, using high-tech plastics and aluminum doors and front lid. The suspension was all new and multi-adjustable, while a clever system monitored tire pressures on the move.

Then there was the engine, a monstrous twin turbocharged version of the familiar flat six. With only 2.85 liters, it developed 450bhp and could accelerate the 1450kg (32001b) 959 from rest to 60mph (96kph) in an unbelievable 3.6 seconds, or 0-100mph (0-161kph) in a stunning 8.2 seconds.

The piece de resistance was undoubtedly the transmission. Not only was four-wheel drive permanent, and not only did it has six speeds, but there was also a choice of four computer-controlled traction settings to suit different conditions: thick snow/mud, ice, wet and dry. Even so, the rear-engine 959 was challenging to drive.

Only existing Porsche owners could buy the £155,000 ($261,000) car, and very quickly a "grey market" sprang up, boosting used prices to ridiculous levels. Since less than 300 were ever made, demand would always outstrip supply, and remaining examples are blue-chip classics of the first order.
