PORSCHE 356 (1949-1965) CAR HISTORY

Ferdinand Porsche set up his design consultancy in 1931 but the first car to bear his name — the 356 — was not built until 1946. A dumpy-looking little rear-engine sports car, the 356 was closely related to the VW Beetle - another famous Porsche design — with an air-cooled flat-four pushrod engine and the same kind of trailing-link front suspension with high-pivot swing axles at the rear. There were coupe, cabriolet and shallow-screened sportster versions, the latter now much sought-after (and replicated by kit-car builders).

Early cars, built in Austria up to 1950, had split windscreens and 1100 cc versions of the air-cooled flat four producing just 40 bhp. There were further 1287, 1290 and 1488cc versions producing up to 70 bhp. The original rounded roly-poly styling was changed on the 1955 356A to a crisper shape with a curved one-piece screen, improved front suspension and steering and a bigger 1600 engine.

From here on the story gets complex: the 356B of 1959 had a higher nose and came in two new styles - the speedster- based Roadsters and a notchback coupe by Kannann. Top of the standard range was the 110 mph (177 kph) Super 90, but even the standard 60 bhp car could achieve 100 mph (160 kph). The last-of-the-line, the 356C, had ZF steering and four-wheel disc brakes. The names were changed, too: the Super became the 1600C, the Super 75 the 1600S and the Super 90 the 1600SC, with an extra 5 bhp.

For advanced students there were the Carrera versions of the 356 from 1955. Engines were still flat fours but totally different in detail: the crank was a roller bearing type and instead of pushrods there were four overhead camshafts with twin-plug per-cylinder ignition. With lighter bodywork, the first 100 bhp cars were good for 120 mph (193 kph) and 1.6-litre models from 1958 an amazing 130 mph (209 kph). The Can-era 2, based on the B/C series, appeared in spring 1960 with a new two-liter version of the complex four-cam flat four which produced up to 155 bhp in GT form.

The 356 improved dramatically over the years, growing more and more specialized and increasingly distant from its VW Beetle roots. Compact, beautifully built and in some cases very fast, it was the car with which Porsche built its reputation in the 50s, and its passing was much mourned when the 911 Series took over completely in 1965.

This left a gap in the range for a cheaper Porsche, filled by the 912 which used the pushrod 356 engine in a 911 shell.
