for Gran Turismo Americano and was a development of the original Pontiac
GTO name which meant so much to muscle-car enthusiasts. Hence, the GTA
for 1987-1992 had to be good. With the 350 ci (5.7-litre) high-output
engine, it finally got the power that early-1980s versions had lacked,
and once again represented a great muscle machine which was quick in a
straight line, and also was economical and could handle with the best
supercar exotica. Although still a live axle chassis, the rear end was
held in check well, thanks to a torque arm, Panhard rod and lower trailing
arms. Being on the same platform as the Camaro meant MacPherson struts
up front, and disc brakes were fitted all around, completing the very
axle package. The engine got Tuned Port Injection which increased power
while retaining impressive mpg, considering the car's potential.
