| | PONTIAC CHIEFTAN (1949) CAR HISTORYCar review on PONTIAC CHIEFTANPontiac was one
of the last brands to offer new models following the war, but when it
did, it gave them cleaner, more integrated styling with a handsome front
fender line which continued down the side to flow into the rear fender.
The Chieftan replaced the Torpedo and was lower-slung because of a new
chassis design which incorporated an X-brace for improved rigidity. The
front suspension featured double wishbones while the rear had leaf springs,
but all were designed to be soft to give the Chieftan the best possible
ride quality. The straight-eight engine had made its debut in 1933 so
was old, but by 1949 it was up in displacement and, thanks to the long-stroke
crankshaft, torquey at low revs. The convertible was the most expensive
model in 1949, and continues to be the most 'in demand' Pontiac today,
with values up to $30,000.
