go of the notion that people liked their muscle cars, Pontiac developed
the Cam Am in 1977 by dropping their 400 ci (6,554 cc) V8 engine into
the Le Mans. The limited-edition car had just 3,177 models made, but they
were great performers in their day. While the suspension was conventional,
coming from the Le Mans, the Can Am received the RTS (Radial Tuned Suspension)
package, and this included stiffer springs and shocks, front and rear
anti-roll bars, and steel belted radial tyres. If sold in California the
engine was the 185 bhp (138 kW) 403 ci (6.6-litre) Oldsmobile V8, though
everywhere else got the W-72 code high-output 400 ci (6.5-litre) Pontiac
V8 with dual-plane intake manifold and four-barrel carburettor. Inside,
the dash housed multiple circular gauges and enclosed the driver. The
three-spoke wheel and bucket seats boasted sporting intentions.
