in the late 1960s that muscle-car enthusiasts wanted high power and no
frills, in a car at reasonable price, so they responded and launched the
Road Runner. Warner Bros were paid $50,000 for the use of the cartoon
name and logo, and although the forecast was sales of 2,500, the Road
Runner was such a success that it sold 44,589. Chrysler torsion bars were
uprated or the front and the live axle was on leaf springs with 3.23:1
gears, though higher gearing for better acceleration was available. The
engine was the basic cast-iron big-block which had been in production
since the 1950s, in this form displacing 383 ci (6.3 litres) but putting
out tremendous torque. The heads, camshaft, exhaust were all from the
bigger 440 ci (7.2-litre) motor. Despite its size, the Road Runner in
basic form was relatively lightweight and performed very well.
