| | PLYMOUTH PROWLER (1997) CAR HISTORYCar review on PLYMOUTH PROWLERThe public's response
to the concept Prowler blew Chrysler away. They knew they had to make
it, but it also took some time to get into production as the concept was
so radical. When it appeared, demand was overwhelming, to the point where
the $40,000 price doubled within months on the second-hand market. The
design was led by Chrysler head Tom Gale, a hot redder at heart, who wanted
to give the public a modern slant rod. The design sheet said it had to
be light, so an aluminum chassis was built with slender A-arms at either
end for independent suspension. At the front, coilover shocks were mounted
inboard like a race car, while the rear used a multi-link arrangement
which made for brilliant handling. To distribute weight the gearbox was
part of the rear transaxle and the engine set well back in the frame.
The only let down was the lack of power.
