to call the Panoz roadster a modern Shelby Cobra, because it had a similar
build specification and borrowed many components from Ford's Mustang.
Danny Panoz had taken over the Irish motorsport company in 1994 and wanted
to produce a car which offered raw driving thrills, and the Roadster debuted
that same year. Two years on it had developed further into the AIV (aluminum-intensive
vehicle) Roadster, so called because it featured aluminum in the body,
engine and chassis. The frame was conceived by racing-car engineer Frank
Costin (the 'cos' in Marcos) and comprised large-bore aluminum tubes
with tubular backbone, off of which hung race A-arm suspension either
end with either a standard or sport setting. The 13-inch (330 mm) ABS
disc brakes gave the Panoz astonishing stopping power, while the 32v engine
gave it amazing go, both from the Mustang Cobra.
