Founded in 1889, the French firm of Panhard was one of the pioneers of motoring, but by the 1950s its star had begun to fade as sales went into decline in the face of more conventional opposition from Peugeot, Citroen and Renault. This is not to say, however, that the company didn't make some impressive machines: the Dyna was one of the best and fastest economy cars of its era, giving 75 mph (120 kph) on two cylinders and 745cc, while the PL17 that followed was a futuristic family six-seater, still with a mere 845 air-cooled flat-twin engine yet capable of90 mph (145 kph) in Tigre form.

Even more desirable was the glamorous little 24 Series, introduced in 1963 and the last Panhard of all. Here was a modern-looking two-plus-two coupe with a stylish, slippery shape distinguished by large window areas and cowled-in lights behind glass. It used the same drive train as the PL17 with front-wheel drive, four speeds and two engine options, the most powerful being the Tigre unit giving 60 bhp with a twin-choke carb (24CT). Top speed, even with just 845cc, was an amazing 100 mph (160 kph), still with potential if driven normally. The flat twin, related to the original Gregoire design of the 1940s, couldn't disguise its poor, low-speed torque and roughness, but it smoothed out beautifully at higher speeds where the CT excelled. The 24CT had the lower-powered 50 bhp unit. The range was broadened by the 24B, BT and BA with a longer wheelbase and full four-seater body. All cars had a four-speed floor gear-change and, from 1965, four-wheel disc brakes.

By then, Citroen had taken over the ailing Panhard and were struggling to make the expensive-to-build 24 Series profitable. Sales were slow and Citroen gave up the unequal struggle in 1967, killing the marque and using the Paris factory to increase their own production capacity.
