| | PACKARD 6/110 (1940) CAR HISTORYCar review on PACKARD 6/110While most luxury
cars were using a V8 or, in some cases, a V12, Packard shunned these for
its junior car, the 6/110, the name of which denoted six cylinders and
1 l0 bhp (82 kW). Packard customers expected smooth, silent and ultra-refined
engines, and the 110 still met those requirements whilst being less punchy
' than the V8 cars. The cars were designed to be luxurious rather than
lightweight or sporting, hence most of the time a few extra pounds here
or there didn't matter. However, in the case of the X-braces chassis,
the crossmember was drilled to save weight. At the front the car was hi-tech
for the time, as it had an independent double wishbone set-up with coil
springs which gave an excellent ride quality. The rear consisted of a
live axle on two longitudinal leaf springs. Other useful extras were air-conditioning,
an overdrive gearbox and electrical windshield wipers.
