the 4-4-2 package with the later model Oldsmobiles, but it actually started
life in 1964 as an option on the F-85 intermediate model. In the following
year, GM limited its engines to 400 ci (6.55 litres) in intermediate-sized
cars, and as such, the 425 Olds engine had to be destroked to 400 ci,
and this motor became part of the 4-4-2 package. The F-85 for 1966 was
restyled and the 4-4-2 was again available as an option. This car came
about in an increased effort to promote the company's presence on the
drag strip. For $279 the W-30 package gave the engine a high-lift camshaft,
bigger valves and a pair of hoses that gave fresh air to the triple two-barrel
Rochester carburettors. Most W-30 models in 196b were the stripped-out
two-door pillared coupes, and as 4-4-2s, featured stiffer rate springs
and shocks, plus front and rear anti-roll bars.
