MORRIS MINOR (1948-1971) CAR HISTORY

The much-loved Morris Minor was the outstanding economy car of its day and became one of the best-selling and longest lived too — production ran from 1948 to 1971.

Its rack-and-pinion steering and torsion-bar independent suspension gave superb handling. Modern unitary construction and smooth styling made the Minor seem ultramodern after the warmed-up pre-war cars British motorists were used to. Designer Alee Issigonis had wanted a flat-four engine for the car but had to make do with the existing Series E flat-head in-line unit, smooth but under-powered. These, known as the MM Series cars, had low-mounted headlights until 1950. The two-door and open toured were joined by the four-door at about the same time, but the most important change came in 1952 when the overhead-valve Austin engine was fitted, first fruit of the BMC merger. The classic half-timbered Traveler was announced in 1953.

The next landmark was the introduction of the 948cc engine in 1956 when the cars were badged Minor 1000. Combined with the higher final | drive, this put the top speed up to a J respectable 70 mph (112 kph). You could recognize the Minor 1000 by its larger -rear window (on the saloons) and one- piece front screen. There were wider opening doors from 1959. Flashing indicators replaced semaphores in 1961.

When production turned 1 million in 1959, BMC produced 350 commemorative Minor 1,000,000s with lilac paint and white seats. The last major update was introduction of the 48 bhp 1098cc engine in 1962. The open tourers and four-door saloons died out in the late 60s, but the two-door and the Traveler — continued until 1971. Simple, enjoyable and easy to drive, Minors survive in large numbers and remain one of the most affordable true classics you can buy.
