| | MERCEDES-BENZ 600 (1963-1981) CAR HISTORYCar review on MERCEDES-BENZ 600With the 1961 600, Mercedes set out to build the world's ultimate saloon – a Rolls-Royce beater — with no regard to cost or compromise. Millionaires could choose the standard 126in (320cm) wheelbase, 18ft (5.5m) four-door 600. Heads of state had the Pullman, its wheelbase stretched to 153in (389cm) and available with an optional six doors, extra occasional scats and a glass division between front and rear compartments. Both used a 6.3-litre fuel-injected V-eight engine producing 300 bhp, driving through an obligatory four-speed automatic transmission. Independent suspension used air bags on all four wheels, powered by an under- bonnet pump, for a firm, comfortable ride. Seat adjustment, steering assistance and door locks were linked to a central hydraulic system. Despite its enormous weight – 5000 lb(2268kg) for
the saloon, 5850lb (2654kg) for the eight-seat Pullman the 600 was no
sluggardly barge: it would top 120 mph (193 kph), storming to 60 (96) in
not much more than 10 seconds - though the penalty was fuel consumption
in low teens. Handling, too, was surprisingly nimble, with good power
steering, plenty of grip and brakes - big four-wheel discs - that were
beyond reproach. There were plenty of sports cars, never mind luxury saloons,
that couldn't live with a well- driven Mercedes 600. Hugely expensive
and hand built in tiny numbers, the 600 stayed on the Mercedes price lists
until1981 and had no effective replacement. The technology found its way
on to lesser Mercedes, most famously the 300SEL 6.3 saloon of 1968.
