In the parlance of Mercedes-Benz, "K" signals "Konipaki", and indeed the SLK was a smaller breed of bargain-priced Mercedes SL sports car, and the first junior Mercedes sports car since (lie 190SL of the late 1950s. It was a perfect foil lo the new Porsche Boxster and BMW Z3 roadster, selling to a new kind of customer for Mercedes: a telling statistic is that over halt of those who ordered an SLK had never had a Mercedes before.

To cut costs, the engine and driveline components were shared with the C Class saloons (sedans), the brakes came from the E Class, and seats were bought in from Recaro. The headlights were unique but molded in plastic. Expensive magnesium structural components were used, but they saved space and enhanced safety.

The car's party trick was an exotic electric roof. In 25 seconds, the SLK's solid Vario roof arched into the air; folded itself in two and carefully stowed itself away in the boot (trunk) before a metal cover snapped shut. The sequence even wound the windows down for you. It worked just as well in reverse, transforming the SLK back into a draught-free coupe, and you didn't even have to clip the roof on to the windscreen edge. Mercedes promised that the electric motors and hydraulic rams were good for at least 20,000 repeat performances.

Inside, the car's cabin was highly styled with embracing bucket seats, and carbonfibre-look cladding on the dashboard and white back-lit dials sunk into chrome-edged portholes.

This was a rear-drive car but, with anti-lock brakes and traction control, only the reckless could provoke the back of the SLK out of line. Its ride and road holding balance were superbly fluid, and, as with all Mercedes automatics, you could flick the shift down for a faster getaway or change-down for a corner. With the 193bhp supercharged four-cylinder engine, the car's top speed was more than 140mph (225kph), with 0-60mph (0-96kph) in 7 seconds, while there was a cheaper non-supercharged model, too.

The SLK proved amazingly popular, with orders backed up until the end of the century: it seemed that Mercedes' biggest problem with the SLK was building enough of them.
