With Lamborghini selling the technical pace with the mid-engined Miura, critics knew it was only a matter of time before Ferrari and Maserati would have their own mid-engined flagship super cars. In fact it wasn't until 1973 that Ferrari's Berlinetta Boxer became commercially available, just beaten by the Maserati Bora of 1971.

As on the Ghibli, the styling was by Giugiaro, who by (Iris lime had left Ghia and was running his own studio, Ital Design. His shape, first mooted in 1969, was elegant and clean-limbed hut lacking perhaps the sheer animal beauty of the Ghibli and the Lamborghini Miura.

That the Bora was fast almost goes without saying: the 12-year-old 4.7-litre V-eight engine, punching out 310 bhp, could push the slippery Bora up to 175 mph (281 kph) with 80 (128) coming up in second gear. What's more, the Bora was a refined car: audible conversation with a passenger was possible up to 100 mph (241 kph), then unheard-of in a mid-engined. With Citroen now at the helm, it came as no surprise that a few complex hydraulics entered with super-sharp brakes and powered adjustment for the pedals, seats and steering-column rake. Handling was the last word in stability, a major advance on tires front-engined Ghibli.

The Bora was joined in 1972 by a little Ill-other, tire Merak. At first glance, this new entry-level Maserati looked identical to the Bora, with the same front end panels, but from the B pillar back used awkward single-buttress sections sweeping down from the roof. The engine was the three-liter V-six from the Citroen SM. It was much shorter than tire V-eight and allowed two rear seats to be incorporated. It handled well but lacked ultimate punch, a criticism answered by the 1975 SS version in which power was increased from 190 to 220 bhp. For Italy there was a two-liter tax-break special Merak.

The Bora changed little in its nine-year history, gaining only the larger 4.9-litre engine in 1976 before bowing out in 1980. The Merak followed in 1981.
