The name MARCOS was a composite of two illustrious characters in the world of specialist motoring, Jem Marsh and Frank Costin. The first model they created was an all-wooden sport scar, which was brilliant on the track (Jackie Stewart started off in one) but was so hideous that it acquired the nickname "ugly duckling".

Out of this unusual birth came the definitive MARCOS in 1963, whose basic shape remains in production today. The Adams brothers, Dennis and Peter, designed the new MARCOS and, at its debut at the 1964 Racing Car Show, it stole the honors. A futuristic grassfire body sat on the familiar MARCOS wooden chassis.

The original intention had been to create an "all-new" car with its own tailor-made suspension, but financial constraints led to Triumph wishbones being used on the front, although a novel de Dion rear end with Triumph arms was fitted. Even this, however, was later changed to a Ford live-axle set-up. MARCOS cars used Ford, Volvo and Triumph engines. MARCOS's "pot-boiler" in the 1960s was the Mini-MARCOS, a quite ugly little buzz-box whose main distinction lay in its being the only British car to finish the 1966 Le Mans 24-Hour Race. Powered by a Mini engine, it was cheap but crude and was still available new as late as 1994.

MARCOS underwent a temporary demise as a producer of cars in 1971. Marsh continued to provide servicing and parts for MARCOS cars for ten more years, and then boldly relaunched the two-seater in 1981 with a variety of Ford In a world starved of sports cars, the MARCOS met with immediate success, especially when Marsh installed a Rover; V-eight engine to create the Mantula in 1983. Even more attractive was the drop-top Spyder model of 1985. All MARCOS models shared the same basic shape as the classic Adams-penned 1800 of 1963, though the profile evolved with wider wheel arches, spoilers and fatter wheels and tires.

In 1992, a new chapter was written with the arrival of the fully built Mantara, a totally new car with different front suspension and a more radical interpretation of the classic body shape. The Mantara had the option of a Rover 4.5-litre engine, giving a top speed of 160mph (257kph) and a 0-60mph (0—96kph) time under five seconds. Even more spectacular was the 1994 LM series, the letters of its name hinting at MARCOS's re-entry into the Le Mans racing arena. Two versions were offered, the LM500 with a 4.0-litre V-eight engine and the LM600 with a 5.0-litre engine and 320bhp, enough to reach a cool 169 mph (272 kph).

In 1996, MARCOS turned to Ford of America for the Mantis which had a quoted top speed of over 170mph (274kph) and a 0-60mph (0-96kph) time of 4.1 seconds. Ford's quad-cam V- eight engine, with its 352bhp of power, was described as "adequate for a car that weighs 1050kg (23161b)"!
