In 1989, Toyota set out to beat Europe's finest marques at their own game. It wanted to steal a march on Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar by producing the world's best luxury saloon (sedan) -even though it had no experience in this market area. It invented a new brand, Lexus, sent its designers to California to discover what customers really wanted, and came up with the LS400 saloon, a car which signally succeeded in providing a genuine alternative to Europe's classic brands.

Lexus did not stop at the LS saloon, which was supremely competent but ultra-conservative in character. In 1991, it added a bit of spice into its new brand with a coupe version, known in the USA as the LEXUS SC and in Japan as the Toyota Soarer (it was never officially marketed in Europe).

The most striking aspect of the SC was the clean, restrained yet dramatic shape, created in Toyota's California studio. Although it was based on the floor pan of the Lexus saloon, the profile was fresh and boasted many beautiful touches, such as spot lamps shrouded by the subtlest of bulges running the whole length of the bonnet (hood).

In Japan, the catchphrase for the Soarer was "for mind cruising" — which conveyed the new model's primary objective: to transport its occupants over long distances in relaxation and comfort. It also happened to be sizzlingly quick.
The new SC range spanned three engine sixes, from a 225bhp 3.0-litre straight six up to the 4.0-litre V-eight used in the Lexus saloon; not sold in the US, the most powerful member of the family was the 2.5-litre Twin Turbo in-line-six engine, developing 20bhp more than the 4.0-litre V-eight, at 280bhp. The 4.0-litre engine scored 0-60mph (0-96kph) in 6.9 seconds with an automatic gearbox, while the five-speed manual Twin Turbo was nearer six seconds dead.

There was also a choice of three suspension systems. The first was conventional springing. The second was Piezo TRIMS, an electronic air-suspension system, which obviated the need for conventional shock absorbers. Controlled by a microchip in the central electronic management computer, it adjusted each wheel’s suspension according to the load on it at any given time. Top models got full Active Suspension.

Toyota’s engineers went to great lengths to make driving the Soarer an easy experience. Progressive power steering, which stiffened up as speed increased, limited slip differential and a powerful ABS system, eradicated the worries of piloting such a potent machine. Seating was comfortable and the cabin was full of gadgets: satellite navigation, an all-electronic dash with touch-sensitive controls and a television.
