The sensational wedge-shaped Lancia Siratos was conceived because Lancia needed a new rally weapon for the 1970s. The Fulvia HF, lay (lay late 60s/early 70s, was looking and feeling old and couldn't put enough power through its front wheels for predictable handling. The 170 bhp Renault Alpines — despite delicate gearboxes - were embarrassing the once-proud Lancia coupe. What Lancia's competitions boss Cesare Fiorio knew lie needed was a specially tailored rally car homologated for Group 4: powerful, light, mid-engined and strong enough to compete on rough events like the Safari with suspension that could be adjusted to suite the conditions.

He saw his salvation in an unlikely place: the Bertone stand of the 1970 Turin motor show. Here sat an incredibly low wedge of a car called Stratos (short for stratosphere). It was designed by the young Marcello Gandini, best known then for his Lamborghini Miura. Mid- engined and light, it used a Lancia engine, the V-four 1600HF from the Fulvia: Fiorio saw at once that the screen-cmn-door layout and the extremely laid-back driving position could never be practical on a rally car, but the car ran under its own power and concept was there.

With the blessing of Lancia's new managing director Ugo Gobbalo, Bertone - and Gandini – were commissioned in 1971 to build a more conventional device, still mid-engine and sitting on the same wheel base but built around a new drive train, the Ferrari Dino 2.4 V-six and its five-speed transaxle. There was talk of a cheaper alternative Fiat 132 drive train, and Lancia even threatened to use the Maserati Bora 4.7-litre V-eight when the request for 500 Dino engines met with some political resistance within Maranello. In fact — apart from a single four-cylinder prototype — the Stratos only ever used this four-cam iron block unit, mounted on a beefy box section with beams welded to the firewall of (lie steel driving compartment/monocoque. Front suspension was coils, wishbones and an anti-roll bar, while at the rear a stronger system of Beta-style struts with lower wishbones replaced a double wishbone and coil-spring set-up that had proved fallible during testing.

A prototype, looking more or less like the eventual production car, was shown at Turin in 1971 on the Bertone stand: testing continued in 1972 and 1973 until production finally began tentatively late in 1973. They needed to build 4.00 cars to homologate the Stratos for Group 4 international rallying. Some say Bertone built 1,000 cars, others say fewer than 500, and the latter figure seems to be the most widely accepted. The car was finally passed for homologation on 1 October 1974.

Bertone built the monocoque and glassfibre nose/tail sections in Turin with final assembly (trimming, painting, testing etc.) at Lancia's Chivasso factory.
Production was pushed quickly during the summer to get the car homologated and officially ended in 1975.
