This interesting mid-engine sport scar began life in the Fiat empire as a future sister model for the little Xl/9. Indeed, the project was referred to under the name Xl/20, but a shuffle of priorities then switched the new model under Lancia's wing.

The Montecarlo was launched at the 1975 Geneva Motor Show in both fixed coupe and targa-topped "Spider" versions. Its clean lines, featuring prominent black bumpers, a forward-thrusting snout and rear flying buttresses, created a stir with fans.
Much of the car was plundered from the parts bin of the Lancia Beta range, including its 2.0-litre engine and many detail items. That kept costs down, and enabled Lancia to sell a car that many likened to a miniature Ferrari for a bargain price.

The story was not all roses, however, The engine was not really powerful enough for a true sport scar, the road holding was positively dangerous in wet conditions, and severe front-wheel lock-up under braking forced Lancia to suspend production in 1978 pending an 18-month-long return to the proverbial drawing board.

When the Montecarlo reappeared in1980, Lancia had addressed the problems: the front brake problem was cured by removing the servo assistance and the tail-happy nature was tamed by revised suspension. Also new were the grille, bigger wheels and a six-year anti- corrosion warranty. In America, the Montecarlo was sold as the Scorpion with a dreadfully underpowered 80bhp 1.8-litre engine. When production ended in 1984 there was no direct replacement, and this was effectively the last real Lancia sports car.
