Car review on LANCIA FULVIA 1.6 HF

Shrouded in mystique and mythology, the 1.6 HF was a prince among Lancia Fulvias. It had a magnificent rally pedigree (with two world championship wins), 115 mph (184 kph) ability and an exotic and muscular specification.

Under the bonnet was a gem of a narrow-angle 1585cc V-four only used on early HFs. Carburetors were twin Weber 42s which made a throaty 115 bhp, peaking at 6200rpm, though a handful of specially-tuned factory cars had 132 bhp. The bespoke "piggy-back" five-speed gearbox — using the four-speed casing extended to house an extra set of gears — drove the front wheels, and like all Fulvias the HF had excellent handling. It did without a servo for its Dunlop disc brakes.

Outwardly the wheel arches probably gave it away first; black glassfibre fillets covered wider tires on deep-rimmed Campagnolo alloys. The back sat quite high, the nose low, sniffing the road, and from the front there was a definite touch of grip-enhancing negative camber. Other HF giveaways were the lack of bright trim around the windscreen rubber, the subtle badges, alloy opening panels and, most significantly, massive 7-in (17.8-cm) driving lamps. HF points inside are more numerous. Seats are lightweight skeletal buckets, with a skimpy padded bench behind, rather than the standard coupe's proper moulded affair. Later "lasso" 1600HFs were soft more luxurious cars, still fast but much less specialized.

Just 1280 1.6 HF Fulvias were built in 1968 and 1969 to homologate the car for international rallying. A batch of 30 came to the UK in right-hand-drive form with more trim for British customers who didn't want Plexiglas and vulnerable bumper less bodywork.
The HF was the spiritual progenitor of today's pocket-rocket homologation specials such as the M3 and Integrale "Evo".

When the final chapter on the motorcar in the 20th century is written, the jewel-like 1.6 Fulvia will probably go down as one of the great driving machines.
