Honed through six series of careful development, with little thought to cost or compromise, the Lancia Aurelia B20 was a classic from birth. Discerning drivers respected its pace and handling — Formula 1 aces Fangio and Hawthorn both loved their B20s - while styling connoisseurs feted Pininfarina's trend-setting coupe envelope for its elegant simplicity. Even in 1958, at the end of its eight-year cycle, a B20 was still one of the quickest, and most stylish, methods of arriving at your destination.

Schemed by Vittorio Jano, the Aurelia B10 saloon was at the frontier of motorcar design in 1950, and even when the final 6th series B20 coupes were rolling out of the Pininfarina works in 1958, few, if any, cars had caught up with it.

Early two-liter Aurelia coupes (1st and 2nd Series) are much coveted by the cognoscenti, while the 5th and 6th Series B20 coupes have a softer, more touring character than the earlier cars. You can spot a 6th Series coupe by its front-opening quarter-lights in the doors and chrome gutter and bonnet strips. The monocoque shell was assembled from hand-beaten steel panels, welded together, Lancia supplying a rolling platform to Pininfarina.

At the B20's heart was a V-six engine, the first in series production, its capacity increased to 2451cc for the 3rd Series coupe of 1953. By the time the 6th Series cars were announced in 1957, it was producing a modest 112 bhp: 5th and 6lh Series Aurelias were actually detuned for increased torque by way of a softer cam. Its alloy block was short and. stiff and well mounted on rubber to absorb some of the unavoidable roughness — inherent — in some parts of the rev range in a V-six design. It made do with a single camshaft in the valley of the V, operating light alloy pushrods. In-, line valves worked in a modern hemispherical combustion chamber. A double-choke Weber 40 sat in the centre of the V.

All Aurelias used a new rear- mounted, alloy-cased gearbox housing clutch, gears, final drive and the mountings for the inboard drum brakes. It even had its own oil pump and used massive aluminum pot joints mounted outside the wheel hub to reduce angular movement and wear. The 5th and 6th Series cars had a strengthened first gear and clutch but retained the fashionable column gear change: a Nardi floor-shift was a contemporary conversion. The 6th Series pulled 22 mph (35 kph) per 100 rpm in its non-overdriven top ratio. From the 4th Series onwards, the Lancia semi-trailing arm suspension was discarded for a DeDion system that gave slightly more predictable wet-weather handling. Classic sliding pillar suspension remained at the front, its "I" beam axle strengthened on these later cars in an attempt to banish brake judder and steering shimmy.

Such was the popularity of the B20 that production carried on into the Flaminia era, the last 6th Series being built in the summer of 1958.
