| | GMC TYPHOON (1992) CAR HISTORYCar review on GMC TYPHOONGMC had plans
to improve its image among performance enthusiasts, so in 1991 started
by creating the ultimate hi-power pick-up, the GMC Syclone. A year later,
with the continuing popularity of Sport Utility Vehicles, it debuted the
Typhoon, which had far more room; enough for five adults plus their luggage,
in fact. The Typhoon sat on the same separate chassis, with live rear
axle and 11-inch (279 mm) ABS-assisted vented discs. The engine was from
the GMC Jimmy, all cast-iron but uprated from the stock 165 bhp (123 kW)
thanks to an intercooled turbo and altered engine management. The torque
was split 35:65 front/rear with a mechanical centre differential and viscous
coupling, though the live rear axle also had a limited-slip differential
for better traction. The four-speed auto could only just handle the power,
evident from the interior sticker that read: 'Do not tow with this vehicle.'
