| | GMC FC-101 STEPSIDE (1951) CAR HISTORYCar review on GMC FC-101 STEPSIDEGMC introduced their new range of light-duty trucks in 1947,
with smoother styling and a redesigned cab. The cab gave an extra inch
headroom but, more importantly, an extra 7 inches (178 mm) leg-room, which
made all the difference to many buyers. It also had improved glassware,
making visibility much better in this utility vehicle. Underneath it remained
very much the same as the previous CC/EC series models, with solid axle
front and rear supported on leaf springs, though the telescopic shocks
were a big improvement for ride quality, and buyers could opt for an extra
set on the rear if they carried heavy loads. The engine was given slightly
more power for the 1951 model year, along with better electrics and optional
twin tail lamps, and through a four-speed manual, while performance wasn't
brisk, it was torquey at low rpm, which is exactly what most owners needed.
