the Thunderbird went head-to-head with the Corvette, and started off well,
thanks to a V8 being put under the hood where the Corvette only had a
feeble straight-six. The '55 T-bird made 16,000 sales, massively outselling
the 'Vette and making the Blue Oval two-seater somewhat of a supercar.
Decades later, the early model is still in demand as it's known as the
purest form of the machine; later versions were larger, more bloated and
not particularly sporty. This version retains a stock body but underneath
the chassis has been designed for the best possible layout and packaging.
It uses a Vortech supercharged V8 with NASCAR racing heads and custom
engine management with fuel injection. A beefed-up Ford overdrive transmission
sends torque to a strong 9-inch (229 mm) Ford axle located on racing type
four-bar suspension, to give 11-second quarter-mile times.
