desirable of all Thunderbirds was the rare 300 bhp (223 kW) supercharged
1957 F-Bird, of which just 208 were made. The car came about through Ford
wanting to compete in a flying-mile competition at Daytona Beach, Florida.
NASCAR ran the event and stipulated that in order to compete, the car
must be homologated, so Ford made the necessary amount of 200 and fitted
each one with a Paxton-McCulloch centrifugal supercharger which gave an
extra 75 bhp (56 kW) and 40 lb ft (54 Nm) torque, enough to propel the
car to a flying mile of 93.312 mph (150.13 km/h), beating the record held
by a Duntov Corvette. The car went through very few changes other then
the addition of a blower, but because of its rarity, an unrestored clean
model can now command a price upwards of $60,000. Few are left, but Ford
fans who grew up at the time of the two-seater Thunderbirds pay for good
examples.
