most popular workhorses of the time, the Fl had many fans as it was tough,
reliable and could be ordered with the optional 239 ci (3.9-litre) Rathead
V8. The Fl was Ford's first new production vehicle following the war,
and it had increased room over pre-war models, plus greater refinement,
something that truck lovers were to demand more of in later models. As
the trucks were built rugged in the first place, this one has needed little
to cope with the extra power provided by a small-block Ford V8. A 9-inch
(229 mm) Ford rear axle puts down the torque well, but apart from that,
just the gearbox has changed, with all fitting where they're supposed
to without major modification. The original suspension remains, with lowering
blocks on the front leaf springs to get the nose 'in the weeds' and the
rear having the axle put above the leaf springs, instead of below, as
standard.
