| | FIAT 850 COUPE (1965) CAR HISTORYCar review on FIAT 850 COUPEThe sports versions of Fiat's bread-and-butter 850 arrived a year after the saloon version in 1965. Bertone styled a pretty two-seater spider variant while Fiat's own styling department produced a neat fastback four-seater coupe. The rear seats were near useless and the luggage space in the nose was modest, but this didn't stop people buying the little 850 in huge numbers.
The Geneva show of 1968 saw the introduction of a revised
coupe with a bigger 903cc engine that pushed the top speed to about 95 mph
(152 kph). There were minor styling revisions too, and the carried on in
this form until 1971, by which time the number of 850 coupes produced
was 380,000. The Spider soldiered on until 1974 because of its popularity
in America, although it was effectively replaced by the mid- engined Xl/9.
