Maranello is the northern Italian home of Ferrari, and it is fitting that at least one model should bear its name. Ferrari chose it in 1996 for its first new front-engine two-seater since the 365 GTB/4 Daytona, which was launched 28 years previously in 1968.

What could have caused such an about-face following its predecessor, the mid-engine F512M? The answer is that a front-engine car broadened Ferrari's range and made it very much more practical than the old F512M.

In terms of ancestry, the 550 was most closely related to the 456GT, a four-seater Ferrari Grand Tourer launched in 1992. It shared its basic V-twelve engine and suspension layout. Apart from the very special F50, the Maranello slotted in as the company's quickest car, claimed to reach 199 mph (320 kph) and to do the 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) sprint in 4.3 seconds.

It was a lot more refined than previous Ferraris, but that was again a reflection of the times. On Ferrari's fabled Fiorano test track, the new 550 proved to be 3.2 seconds a lap quicker than the model it replaced. Perhaps the 550's greatest strength was that it felt so capable and refined: the world's fastest grand tourer, perhaps.

Some observers felt Pininfarina's styling lacked any real finesse. Good points were the elegant glass house, the subtle hump in the rear wings, the classic circular tail lamps; the real disappointments were the fussy front-end, the un-Ferrari-like shape and unhappy kicked-up tail.

At £145,000 ($244,000) the 550 cost over 50 per cent more than the dynamically more enthralling F355. In truth, the new Ferrari had a different sort of appeal: this was a tool as much for arriving at a destination feeling relaxed as for the sheer experience of driving.
