n the 1980s, Ferrari extended the boundaries of road-car performance with cars such as the Testarossa and the limited-production 288 GTO. Even considering these and other super cars, nothing came close to matching the F40, one of the greatest Ferraris of all time.
Enzo Ferrari proposed celebrating 40 years of his marque with a very special project that would combine race and road car traits in one machine. The Ferrari board agreed, and the F40, with bodywork by Pininfarina, was brought to production in just 12 months, helped by the fact that it was based on the platform of the 1984-87 288 GTO.

The underlying goal during the F40's development was weight reduction. To this end, the body made innovative use of composite materials, which were claimed to be 20 per cent lighter than conventional metals. This priority also meant the interior was utterly devoid of carpets and door trim. Ferrari certainly succeeded in its goal, since the F40 weighed in at just 24251b (1099kg).

For power, Ferrari developed the 288 GTO V-eight to become a 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged beast. With sequential ignition and injection, silver/cadmium conrod bushes and nicasil-coated liners, the engine was capable of 478 bhp -and up to 200 bhp more if you wanted to go racing.

The performance figures spoke for themselves: a top speed of201 mph (323 kph), 0-60 mph (0-96 kph) in 3.9 seconds and 0-124 mph (0-200 kph) in 12 seconds flat. This was far and away the quickest machine on the road when production began in 1988, almost a year after its debut. It was also the fastest road car Ferrari had ever built.

In character, the F40 was demanding to drive but not overly difficult, while it was hugely tractable yet superbly balanced in handling terms. The fact that the cockpit was sparsely trimmed was a positive point, and the sight of raw carbon fibre and exposed tubing was a delight, not a penance. It meant that being in an F40 was an extremely noisy experience but given the sound — as close to a racing engine as you could get - that was also part of what made the F40 experience so unique.

Considering its intended role as a dual-purpose road/race car, the F40 came with numerous competition features such as Group C brakes, three-piece wheels and bag fuel tanks (cells) ahead of the rear wheels.

It was much focused and technically advanced, but not the technological tour deforce that the Porsche 959 was. Rather it was a car for the dedicated enthusiast, everything being directed towards making it faster and more precise. The fact that many owners successfully took their £163,000 ($275,000) F40 racing proved the point.
