With the authority of a "proper" Ferrari badge — the previous 246 Dino had been marketed as a Fiat - the 308GTB was announced at the Paris show in 1975, supplementing the Bertone-styled four-seater 308GT4. It also marked a return to Pininfarina as Ferrari's favored stylist with a classically aggressive coupe that displayed little in the way of unnecessary ornament. That it changed so little in 13 years of production says much for its elegant purity. A strict two-seater, the 308GTB reverted to the 92in wheelbase of the V-six Dino, but borrowed the tubular-steel chassis and uncompromised double wishbone suspension of the GT4. The large vented and servo-assisted (power) disc brakes made light work of the 1270kg (28001b) GTB, but with 3.5 turn’s lock-to-lock, the rack-and-pinion steering was not startlingly fast.

Mechanically, the car was almost identical to the GT4, producing 255 bhp from a dry-sump version of the strident four-cam V-eight with twin distributors, an oil cooler and transistorized ignition. Rational toothed-belt drive for the camshafts hinted at the influence of Fiat, who was paying the bills. The engine was mounted transversely amidships ahead of the rear wheels, with the five-speed transaxle and limited slip diff tucked in behind it. Running a modest 8.8:1 compression ratio, the five-bearing unit took in fuel and air through four Weber carburetors.

The first cars had glassfibre bodywork, but after 18 months this was abandoned for more traditional steel | body construction - adding 2501b I (113kg) and the promise of rust problems for future owners. The Americans in particular lapped up the 308, particularly the targa-topped GTS model, which consistently outstripped sales of the closed car by a huge margin.

A significant change was Bosch Digiplex fuel injection (first seen on Ferrari's Mondial), which brought cleaner running but milder performance, as peak power tumbled to just 214 bhp for the 1981 GTBi. Within 18 months, the Quattrovalvole (four-valve) model raised power to a healthy 240 bhp with an accompanying increase in torque. With subtly bespoilered front and rear to prolong its shelf life, the QV's performance returned to its earlier pre-injection levels.

The final incarnation of this body shape was the 1985 328, bored and stroked to give 3185cc and 270 bhp for a lop speed of 160 mph (257 kph). Ferrari claimed that build quality was better and the handling sharper.

Some Ferrari experts tend to think of the 308GTB/GTS as the Ferrari for the common man, which comparatively it is: almost 20,000 were built between 1975 and 1989, of which 1637 came to Britain, making it one of the most successful Ferraris ever in that market. Its exceptional qualities confer it genuine classic status.
