it all their own way on the super speedways of NASCAR in the late 1960s,
so Chrysler fought back with the launch of their Charger 500. Most notable
about the bodywork was the flush grille where previously there had been
sunken headlamps. Dodge found the flush look helped significantly with
aerodynamics so the rear window was also mounted as such. Underneath,
the 500 had a unitary body/chassis with torsion bar front end and anti-roll
bar, while the rear was conventional leaf springs. Disc brakes came as
standard at 11 inches (280 mm) diameter and were needed with the big-block
powerplants. The two options were the 375 bhp (28 0kW) 440 ci (7.2-litre)
Magnum engine or the Hemi which was rated at 425 bhp (317 kW), even though
it was closer to 500 bhp (373 kW) in reality. The 500s won 15 races in
1969, but alas, Ford's victories numbered 30.
