The Daimler Majestic Major was one of the most intriguing — and unlikely — high -performance saloons of the early 60s. By fitting a brand-new hemi-head 4.7 liter V-eight (an enlarged version of the unit found in the 2.5 litre Dart) into its biggest executive saloon, Daimler created a 120inph (193kpli) hot-rod limousine that was quicker than the contemporary Jaguars — an embarrassing situation given the Jaguar takeover of Daimler in 1960 - and had astonishing acceleration: 0-60 took just 9.7 seconds.

Despite its traditional separate chassis and tall, dignified body, the Majestic Major had good manners to match its performance and was well reviewed in the press.

The Majestic Major was good value too, with automatic transmission, power steering and disc brakes as standard. Busy managing directors could lounge in leather-lined comfort as they were driven around in the Majestic Major, which had an appropriately huge boot too.

For its carriage trade customers there was a limousine version of the Majestic Major called DR450, with a stretched chassis to accommodate extra occasional seats. It was a little heavier but had scarcely less performance — it was one of the quickest ways of getting to the cemetery.

So impressive was the Daimler's engine that Jaguar briefly toyed with the idea of filling it to a Daimlerized version of the big MkX. The resulting V-eight prototype was canned when it proved embarrassingly faster than the Jaguar production model.

Production of the Majestic Major was always small scale, so sales were low. Production finished, after 1,180 cars and 864 limousines were built, in 1968. From then on, all Daimlers were destined to be badge-engineered Jaguars.
