public started to become less concerned about fuel costs in the 1980s,
manufacturers once again began a power chase and with America's pick-up
obsession, a new market was soon born: the muscle truck. Chevrolet was
one of the first to indulge the market with its 1989 454 C1500 truck,
which had been restyled just a year before, so looked very modern. Underneath
the SS454 was still very trucklike, with a strong ladder frame chassis
and carlike wishbone suspension, but a leaf spring rear. All spring rates
were stiffened and Bilstein shocks were fitted to improve handling. Also
modified was the steering, with quicker gearing to aid response through
the new 225/60 tyres. The 454 ci (7.4-litre) came from the standard C/K
3/4 and 1-ton pick-ups, and with its long stroke was designed for low
rpm torque. The rear end was fitted with 4.10:1 gears for acceleration.
