fins on its late-1950s cars caused some concern at GM, as the competition
was getting all the attention. So they hired stylist Harley Earl to come
up with some wild ideas for their new Cadillac model - the Series 62.
Earl was influenced by aeroplanes, and it showed. Large tail fins, in
fact the biggest to appear on any car ever, stood tall and housed bullet
tail-light lenses, while the front fender and grille looked like a reflection
of itself with four shotgun lenses, the upper two of which automatically
came on at dusk and dipped from high- to low beam when oncoming traffic
was detected. Underneath were coil springs and telescopic shocks, but
the top Eldorado models could be ordered with luxurious air suspension.
The cast-iron big block was enlarged for 1959 and came in two tunes, either
a 325 bhp (242 kW) single carb version, or 345 bhp (257 kW) triple-carb
motor.
