| | CADILLAC ELDORADO (1953) CAR HISTORYCar review on CADILLAC ELDORADOThe first Eldorado
came from Cadillac in 1953 and it was an expensive option over the regular
Series 62 range, costing some $3,600 more. Just 532 were built, so in
1954 the company dropped the price to $4,438, just $300 above the regular
range, and sales went up dramatically to over 2,000. The car was the epitome
of luxury and featured such revolutionary touches as the wraparound screen
which became an industry standard in the 1950s. It also had a signal-seeking
radio, special cut down doors, wire wheels, white sidewall tyres, leather
and cloth upholstery, fog lamps and a metal tonneau cover to fit over
the roof when it was electrically retracted. The engine was the first
new post-war V8 on the market and it was an excellent one. It weighed
200 lb (107 kg) less than the former unit, had 'slipper' pistons and a
shorter stroke, plus a higher compression.
