| | BUICK GSX (1970) CAR HISTORYCar review on BUICK GSXWhile most muscle-car
enthusiasts were content with the mid-sized GS 455, for others it was
too dual, so Buick launched the uprated 1970 GSX. This car had the power
of the regular GS 455, but with better suspension and younger, dynamic
looks, thanks to Magnum 500 wheels, spoilers, scoops and stripes. The
suspension used independent wishbones at the front and coil springs out
back (all heavy-duty), and anti-roll bars at both ends to improve cornering.
The brakes comprised 11-inch (280 mm) discs and finned drums for better
cooling. The 455 ci (7.5-litre) was the biggest engine Buick produced,
and standard in the base GSX, though most buyers opted for the Stage 1
conversion with a four-barrel carb, high-lift camshaft, larger valves
and a 10.5:1 compression. It had a real rating of around 400 bhp (298
kW) and massive torque, making it one of the most powerful muscle-car
big-block motors.
