Austin was first off the mark into post-war production in 1945, and the A90 Atlantic was Britain's first car designed specifically for the American market. It had a promising start. Launched at the Earls Court Motor Show in 1948, it was a sensation.

While other makers continued with warmed-up pre-war leftovers, here was an all-new 95 mph (152 kph) British convertible with modern full-width styling: the front wings were bulbous and full, sweeping down across the deep, thick doors to blend gently into the big one-piece rear wings and cowled-in wheel arches, forming a rakish, bold profile. Incredibly for 1948, the Atlantic could be had with a power top and door glasses, unheard-of in Britain: a switch had the top up and latched down in 22 seconds. Other Atlantic luxuries included such rare refinements as an Ecko radio, adjustable wheel and a heater.

The rugged internals were warmed-up A70 saloon, a long-stroke, overhead-valve 2199cc four-cylinder engine bored out to 2660cc and giving 88 bhp on twin SUs: Longbridge rounded the output up to 90 to give the new flagship its name. More telling was the 1401b/ft (190.5 newton metres [N m]) of torque that peaked at 2500rpm. There were four speeds on a very American steering-column shift.

It was the Atlantic's pace, above all, that impressed the pundits. It was one of a handful of cars since the war that could top 90 mph (145 kph), and of those, the Atlantic was easily the cheapest. 0-60 mph (96 kph) in 16.6 seconds wasn't hanging about in 1948 either and, with petrol still rationed, up to 25mpg could be obtained. In America, where buyers expected six or eight cylinders, not four, sales never took off. In 1949 an Atlantic broke 63 American stock-car records at Indianapolis over seven days.

The Atlantic was short-lived. Austin tried to sustain interest in it with a $1,000 price-cut in 1949 and then, in 1951, a fixed-head saloon version with hydraulic brakes and a lower axle ratio but the convertible ceased production in January 1951. The saloon struggled on until September 1952, ousted by the BMC merger that year. The final tally was 7,981 cars and of the 3,597 exported, only 350 made it to America.
